Lead a Thriving Church

When Soaring Feels Impossible

Every pastor has a few favorite passages. Mine has always been Isaiah 40:31. It’s a verse I first heard as a teenager, and it stuck with me like an anchor in a storm:

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31, NIV)

At first, this verse felt like one of those old Successories posters—mountain peaks and motivational slogans meant to inspire. If I just “hoped in the Lord,” I’d soar above my struggles like an eagle.

But over time, I’ve realized this verse offers much more than a promise of endless energy or victory. It reflects God’s provision in every season of life, whether we’re soaring, running, or simply walking.

Not Just Motivation: What Isaiah 40:31 May Mean To You

There’s a motivational element to Isaiah 40:31, but it’s not about a life free of pain or effort. Instead, it acknowledges the ebb and flow of life. God provides strength based on where we are—not where we wish we were.

As I’ve reflected on this passage, three other scriptures come to mind:

  • 2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
God strengthens us even in our weakness.
  • Matthew 6:11: “Give us today our daily bread.”
God provides for our needs in the moment, not an overabundance for the future.
  • Psalm 23:4: “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
God sustains us through our hardest moments.

Each of these verses reinforces an important truth: our faith journey isn’t always soaring on eagle’s wings. Sometimes it’s running with determination. Sometimes it’s simply putting one foot in front of the other.

Strength for the Season

Isaiah 40:31 reminds us that God meets us exactly where we are. Whether we’re soaring, running, or walking, He renews our strength for the season we’re in.

  • When We Soar:
In seasons of triumph, it’s easy to feel God’s presence. Victories and joys remind us of His provision.
  • When We Run:
Running is harder. It takes endurance, but we can still move forward with purpose, fueled by God’s sustaining power.
  • When We Walk:
Walking feels ordinary—far from soaring—but it’s no less miraculous. Each step forward is a testament to God’s grace and provision.

God doesn’t demand constant strength or stamina. He calls us to trust Him. Even slow, deliberate steps count as faithfulness.

A Word for You and Those You Lead

As pastors and ministry leaders, it’s easy to feel like you should always be soaring. But the reality is, there will be times when simply walking forward is a victory.

Today, if you feel like you’re walking when you wish you were soaring, take heart. Walking is enough. God sees your faithfulness and provides exactly what you need to keep moving. Trust that even in your smallest steps, He is carrying you closer to His purpose.
